Are you a parent looking to start your own business? If so, you may have already figured out that there are many challenges associated with working with a child on your hip. Fortunately, there are childcare options that will give you a helping hand in the day-to-day raising of children so that you can provide for their future. Hudson Valley Family Doulas shares some tips.

The Problem With Working While Parenting

First, it’s important to understand that many working moms and dads keep their children home. There is no shame in this, and it is possible. But there are many significant challenges that childcare, whether from your partner, a family member or childcare professional, can help you overcome. One of the most significant is that you never really feel as though you are giving your best as a parent or professional. Some days, you may be able to focus on your children when they need you the most — while others, it might be frozen pizza for lunch while you wrap up a big project. Another major concern for entrepreneurs who also happen to work from home is noise. While you can certainly soundproof your office, this might also mean that you cannot hear your children if they need you from the next room.

You have a couple of options as an entrepreneur with children. One is to look to your partner to provide childcare support. This might be the best option if you have a new baby who isn’t old enough for childcare outside the home. If your partner is able to provide in-home care that will also allow you to spend time with your child throughout the day. Putting your children into a quality child care facility is the next option. Doing so means that you know someone has their eyes and ears on your little one at all times. If you already have trouble focusing, knowing that your child is taken care of will help you take care of business. You’ll be faster and more efficient and much less at-risk of business burnout if you don’t feel as though you’re rushing through each project to stop and fix snacks and lunches.

Better for Kids

There are plenty of benefits for your children, as well. A structured childcare environment means your kids get to learn the concept of schedules and routines. They have access to academic and social opportunities and, just as importantly, your little one will learn to feel more confident outside of your arm’s reach. Children in daycare tend to be better communicators and often enter their formal schooling years more prepared than their counterparts who never left the living room. Finally, as the Journal Of The American Medical Association Pediatrics showcases in this still-relevant study from 2002, children who attend daycare have fewer colds once they enter elementary school.

Beyond Childcare

In addition to finding quality childcare for your kids, there are a few other things you can do to make the entrepreneurial process much easier. One is to create your business structure early on. For small business owners, this often means forming an LLC — something you can easily do on your own without the expense of an attorney. An online formation service like Zenbusiness can get you through the process quickly and easily.

Next, hire someone to help with your daily tasks. You can hire a virtual assistant for your business or someone to come in and clean the house so that you can focus on your family once the day is done.

It’s not always easy for parents to let go of some of the responsibilities of taking care of their children. But when your responsibilities also include being a provider and business owner, having a great childcare option in your corner is one of the best decisions you can make.
