If you’re reading this, you’re probably wondering what in the world is a doula?! And what do they do?! My name is Julia Mignoli and earlier this year I became a trained birth doula. A birth doula? Are there other kinds of doulas?! YES! Let’s jump (really, it’s a quick hop) into what they are, why you need one, if their fee is really worth it and where to find one…
What is a doula? Simply put, a doula is a servant to an expecting family. They assist you with emotional, informational and physical support throughout pregnancy, during birth and immediately postpartum. There are birth doulas, postpartum doulas and even abortion and transition doulas. I’ll expand on these in future posts.
Why do I need a doula? So you might be thinking, can’t my mom, sister, partner or BFF be my doula? Why should I pay for a doula when I have them? I hear you sister! However, I don’t know about you, but I feel most comfy when I am in the hands of a trained professional. I prefer going to trained professionals, with experience, you know, hands-on knowledge. That usually melts a lot of my anxiety away. Peace of mind is EVERYTHING to me. And yes, their fee is worth it. Unless they are charging some ridiculous amount, any worthwhile doula will be charging for their worth. If you think about all of the support you are getting, from every angle, it kind of puts things into perspective. A very wise man once said, “Cheap, no good…Good, no cheap.” A small expense to pay for peace of mind during your journey.
Where do I find my doula? Okay, so if you’re wondering where you find this magical being, the answer is pretty easy. In this day and age you can practically find doulas anywhere. You can do a quick Google search for “doulas near me”. You can go to DoulaMatch.net. You can do a search on social media. One may even ask around for a referral from their care provider or other mommy friends. Really, the possibilities are endless. Trust me, there is a doula near you and for you! My recommendation is that you interview multiple doulas to find who you best connect with. Remember, this person will be with you during one of the most vulnerable times of your life. Make sure you are comfortable with them and their energy.
So there you have it! In case you’re wondering where the heck I am…I proudly serve all types of births throughout the Hudson Valley, Long Island & surrounding New York/Western Connecticut areas.
